Abdali Boulevard Canopies
Sculptural Shading in the Heart of Amman
Located in the heart of Amman’s premier mixed-use development, Abdali Boulevard features a series of custom tensile membrane canopies. These structures enhance the pedestrian experience through functional shading and visual distinction, aligning with the boulevard’s modern urban identity.
Tamimi Steel & Membrane collaborated with Maffeis Engineering S.p.A. to deliver a bespoke tensile system combining aesthetic elegance with structural performance. The PTFE membranes are suspended across a network of steel arches and cable-stayed masts reaching heights of up to 28 meters.

The canopies stretch approximately 370 meters along the boulevard, with widths varying between 70 meters and 20 meters. The structural system integrates curved and linear steel elements that follow the flow of the surrounding architecture, creating a cohesive and visually striking urban feature.

While not a façade in the traditional sense, the canopy system acts as a sculptural roofscape, casting diffused light while shielding the public from harsh sun exposure. Its smooth, white PTFE surface reinforces the upscale, contemporary identity of the development

Structure and Cultural Form
This tensile installation demonstrates how modern membrane engineering can transform public spaces. As a signature urban element, it enhances Amman’s evolving architectural language, offering both shade and symbolic form within a commercial context.
